Wastewater Treatment (WWT) & Recycling Review and Integrated Algal Bloom Management Workshop
On 26–30 October 2009, Wastewater Treatment & Recycling Review, and Integrated Algal Bloom Management Workshop were simultaneously held in the two trial cities Huzhou and Suzhou. More than 30 participants from different authorities and stakeholders attended the workshops, including Suzhou and Huzhou Development and Reform Commissions (DRC), Construction Bureaus, Environmental Protection Bureaus (EPB), Water Resource Bureaus, state-owned water companies and research institutes; and representatives from Wuxi Municipal government agencies.
Wastewater Treatment (WWT) & Recycling Review:
The aims of WWT & Recycling Review are to assess the priority concerns and opportunities regarding waste water treatment and recycling technologies, particularly the removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P), and to make connection with Australian based approaches and technologies in order to identify future directions of technological support.
The WWT & Recycling team was led by Australian wastewater treatment expert Dr. John Messenger, and Project Manager Mr. James Machin. The program included visits to the local wastewater treatment plants, as well as meetings with local government officials and experts to develop an understanding of the status and background in wastewater treatment in these two trial cities, policies, technologies and management measures relating to wastewater treatment and water recycling, and gaps and issues being faced in the two cities. A designated report is to be prepared on this workshop to assess the WWT and Recycling conditions, and identify the gaps and further needs.
The WWT & Recycling Study Tour which being considered as the first Australian study tour will be proposed to conduct between 7 and 19 December.
Integrated Algal Bloom Management Workshop:
This workshop aims to introduce improved and cutting edge approaches used in Australia for the integrated management of algal blooms in order to identify assistance needs for future support, and acquire further understanding of the work currently being undertaken by different actors in the Lake Tai.
During the workshop, Mr. Henry Wang, on behalf of Earth Systems China, initially introduced the workshop program, objectives and outputs. Australian algal monitoring, control and disposal experts Dr. Justin Brookes and Dr. Mike Burch delivered comprehensive presentations on “Integrated Management of Algal Blooms”. Chinese lake expert Prof. Qin Boqiang from Nanjing Institute of Geology and Limnology, China Academy of Science, Ms. Chen Hua Deputy Director of Suzhou DRC and Mr. Liu Wenbao Deputy Director of Suzhou EPB made presentations on Lake Tai algal blooms/monitoring issues, respectively.
