Objectives
The activity aims to improve institutional co-ordination mechanism for wetland management in China through capacity building (study tours, international advisory inputs), assisting in the development of guidelines for management planning and monitoring of Internationally Important Wetlands, wetland restoration, the construction and assessment of National Wetland Parks (NWPs), and develop national policy, including national standards/forestry standards.
Key Activities / Components
· Monitoring and Management Plan for International Important Wetlands (IIWs) - To document and apply international approaches to IIW monitoring for pilot sites with consideration given to wider application in China.
· Construction and Assessment for NWPs - To document and apply international approaches to NWP construction and assessment for sites with consideration given to wider application in China.
· Wetland Restoration - To develop a draft national framework and guidelines for wetland restoration which includes policy and adjustment mechanisms.
· Capacity Building - To build the capacity of an efficient and co-ordinated system for wetland conservation management to co-ordinate the different agencies in China, and the capacity of a group of technicians in China who could independently conduct and further develop wetland monitoring, management, restoration, wetland park construction and assessment and train further technicians as well as the capacity of demonstration site officers who will be able to apply the guidelines effectively.
· Communications - To inform internal and external stakeholders of the project and of the importance of wetland ecosystems and to encourage adoption of project findings and to promote the Australia-China partnership.

Highlights
One of the key components of the project is capacity building activity in Australia. The first training activity will be held in Australia between 25 July and 4 August. The delegation will comprise 5 Wetland Specialists who are directly involved in the project, 2 Wetland Conservation and Management Officers and 1 interpreter. The training will provide an opportunity for Chinese wetland experts to work together with Australian specialists for monitoring, construction, assessment, restoration and management plans and to develop the relevant guidelines in accordance with the Chinese situation. This 11-day training will include desk research, field visits and various meetings and workshops with relevant Australian government agencies.
