Objectives
The Program seeks to strengthen the capacity of Chinese lawyers, administrators and officials to implement the law in ways which are transparent, efficient and fair - the basic ingredients governance – and to promote ongoing professional linkages and information exchange between relevant Chinese and Australian agencies and stakeholders in the legal field.
Key Activities / Components
A number of Chinese legal professionals visit Australia for up to four months each year. They initially undertake a study tour, training and visit program to familiarise themselves with Australia’s legal system before taking up a placement with a law firm, Government Department or Agency, Corporate Counsel, courts or other legal institution. The 3 stage program comprises
· Month 1: Intensive study tour and visit program
· Months 2-4: Work placement in relevant department/agency
· Months 4-5: Written report and ongoing information exchange
Contribution to ACEDP Program Outcomes
Legal training for State Council officer involved in drafting environmental/water legislation has a major impact on influencing good governance practices in Chinese policy formulation and implementation.
Highlights
This year, ACEDP funded an official of the Legislative Affairs Office, of the State Council with legislative drafting responsibilities in the area of agriculture, natural resources and environmental protection to participate in the program.
