A series of drama performances was given by local cultural troupe as a key activity under Improving Gender Equity in Qingtongxia through Women’s Empowerment in Water Management Project on Friday 11 November 2011 in Qingtongxia, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
On that very day, on 11 November 2011 at 11.11am, the UN launched its global ‘One Day on Earth’ initiative, a web-based platform, where people from all over the world can contribute.
In collaboration with UN Women, the Ningxia Government Department of Water Resources, the China Irrigation and Drainage Development Centre and, the farmers and families of Qingtongxia agreed to conduct their ‘Drama Performance to Promote Gender Equality’ on that day and to submit it to the global ‘One Day on Earth’ website.
The performances were well prepared to meet the taste of local famers though local language and cultural expressions including two short and simple plays and two raps. The dramas were extremely compelling and attracted audiences despite the cold and windy conditions. No doubt, it is an excellent example of an innovative way to promote awareness of gender equality and water resource protection at the local level.
An in-door training course was also conducted before the show time, including two presentations about improving irrigation efficiency and gender equity. More than 50 local farmers attended training program and most of them are women farmers.
Qingtongxia TV station recorded news video of training and performances as news programme.
A video record will be available and uploaded to ACEDP website in due course.
